Its nothing but an over-hyped (well, perhaps offbeat) bollywood masala movie...Just because a famous Hollywood director stepped in to make it, everyone's going gaga around the world!
Yes, the production quality and values are excellent, but if a Farhan Akhtar or an Ashutosh Gowarikar or a Mani Ratnam had achieved this same result with the screenplay, it would have been shred to pieces by the critics!
See.. the story was superb..and it was written by none other than an Indian called Vikas Swarup..
It could have been adapted here...but then we don't pick up great stories...we keep making movies on trashy garbage! This guy was smart enough to pick up a story that an Indian wrote, come to India and shot it and then got all the accolades that there were. Nothing wrong about his creative pursuits.
But I do agree with this...if a gowarikar or farhan made it...it might have been good...the fact is that they DID NOT! When they adapt books...they make "Hello??"..The critics wouldn't have trashed it...it might have done well...but not well enough to make it to the oscars!
But we as Indians, have hard luck with the oscars..and it would have returned frm the foreign film cateogary...like the last few yrs..
Anyways...its an awesome movie...lets not get so patriotic..
And if we have to, lets pray tht atleast Rahman gets it! It's much deserved and awaited!
Seems like the topic of the season. Everyone from Boyle to Bachchan has a different opinion. Following are mine ...
1. Indian directors had actually tried to make the movie but Mr. Swarup had already sold the rights. Smart man I say.
2. Even if any Bollywood director had got his hands on this "property", He/She would have changed it beyond recognition. (Hello?)
3. If everyone accepts the RGV's underworld cinema then why have any problem with another branch of the same godforsaken tree? Its not that the others movie's are made for India ONLY!
4. It was a gripping script & even better direction.
5. RDB was way ahead in terms of pure patriotism. So lets just leave this one by calling it a love story.
6. Anything foreign is always greeted with open arms whereas apna desi maal is taken for granted. (Manikchand awards anyone?)
